ENVIRONS

Halzephron House is situated on a breathtakingly-beautiful clifftop, in a location perfect for outdoor hikes and for exploring a range of activities on offer nearby. You step out of your accommodation right onto the coast path where you can head to one of 4 beaches or stroll down the lane towards the excellent, dog-friendly pub that serves local beer and great food.

The area is packed with gardens, sculpture parks, artist studios and little fishing villages. Our visitors have variously enjoyed playing golf at Mullion Golf Club, taking surf lessons at Poldhu beach, rock-jumping at the Lizard and riding at Newton stables. And if you’re a Game of Thrones, Rosamunde Pilcher or Poldark fan, Halzephron sits amongst many filming and book locations. Local pubs often have local shanty singers, including our very own “Odds and Sodds” from Gunwalloe.

There are four beaches within walking distance. Gunwalloe Fishing Cove (5-minutes) is a lovely long stretch of sand that reaches the beautiful harbour town of Porthleven at low tide and is dog friendly all-year. Dollar Cove (10-minute walk), is the location of many a shipwreck and still a favourite hunting spot for treasure from the 1676 Spanish galleon (dog friendly all year). Church Cove (12-minute walk) is a sandy beach with lifeguards during high season. There’s a National Trust Car Park and café here, open during holidays and serving pasties and ice-cream. At Poldhu Beach, over the headland from Church Cove (a further 15-minute walk) you can learn to surf with Dan Joel, or just hire boards. The Café here is open all year round. Dogs are welcome to Church Cove and Poldhu apart from 10am-5pm July and August.

You can walk to Porthleven in just over an hour via the coastal path, passing the beautiful Loe Pool and the Penrose Estate on the way. Look out for migrating birds from the hides around the lake or try and spot the unique Loe Trout or even sword Excalibur, rumoured to have been hidden in the lake. The ‘green gym’ created by the National Trust around Loe Pool is approximately a 20-minute walk away along the coastal path.

Across to the Helford River you can rent your own boat and spend the day pottering along the gentle creeks of the Helford River, the famed location for many of Daphne Du Maurier’s books. The Ferryboat Inn serves fabulous food, and the sub-tropical gardens of Glendurgan and Trebah are worth a visit.

Lizard Point, Britain’s most southerly place, is just a short drive away. Here, you can see the Lighthouse, eat at Polpeor cafe, spot seals (we provide binoculars!) or for those seeking more thrills, book a day out coasteering or sea kayaking. A 45 minute walk along the coast path from the Lizard is Kynance Cove, frequently voted one of the best beaches in the world with its incredible rock formations and double sided beach (at low tide). There's a National Trust café on the beach and carpark at the top of the hill.

St Ives is a must-see destination, packed with galleries, shops, places to eat as well as beautiful beaches and The Tate. Get there early to avoid the traffic or use the shuttles. Or stop at Penzance and the picture perfect St Michael’s Mount on the way. Mackerel Sky seafood Bar in Newlyn is one of our favourites places to eat; trendy, simple, fresh. Or head to Falmouth for a meander down the shopping street.

Whatever you decide to do, we hope you have a wonderful stay with us!
